首先“be likely to do”是一个固定词组,but后面省略了（主语）,完整应该是“but it was more like to begin as.”,“more”比较级修饰“likely”“更有可能”的意思.
but 后“更有可能...”是与but前面的句子做比较而得出的.即使有than,than后接的也应该是“a direct rendering of speech”,因此排除B C D; 对于E呢,虽然前面"it was more likely that it began"是正确的,但其后面少了一个连接词“as”,因此E也不对
句子可大概翻译为“根据学者的研究,最早的写作很可能不是言语的直接运用,而更有可能是作为一种独立的、不同的交流符号体系”

考点有两个
1.not。。。but 表示转折，所以前后分句应该平行，sth was not, but was是平行的，而d，e分句的主语变成it，切断了与前面分句的关系，排除。
2.be likely to do ，如果表示“更可能”使用more likely 而不是more than likely,排除b，c
