The ACI allows all aspects of signals control (e.g.timing,stage sequences,red and green times etc.) to be linked to road traffic conditions via real or simulated control systems.For instance,each bus within S-Paramics can make available data,such as position and schedule number,via the ACI.This data can be used as input to a bus prioritisation controller,which may be able to retrieve a variety of other detailed information relating to the state of the network.
S-Paramics traffic controller simulators can be written in Visual Basic and C++,or may be implemented using standard office tools such as a spreadsheet.Complex controllers using selective vehicle priority may be programmed,and multiple data sources used to coordinate the action of area wide signals.This is particularly powerful when used under constantly changing route choice conditions.
Some pre-existing control algorithms have been re-implemented using Visual Basic and the ACI.CCOL,widely used in the Netherlands and ALINEA,an algorithm to control signals for ramp metering,have been reproduced and applied to simulations.Other control systems may be too complex for viable re-implementation or may be a "black box" to the user.Through the ACI,S-Paramics can be used to test and evaluate the effect of these systems by collaborating with their suppliers and creating a link between the control system and the simulation.Links to SCOOT,SCATS and MOVA have been implemented in this way.
The ACI also includes ITS capability using Variable Message Signs or broadcast media to pass messages to vehicles and modify their behaviour and routeing.The ACI is most conveniently accessed via SIAS's PController,and Paramics Microsimulation provides advice for expert programmers wishing to access it at a low level.
