"The Ugly Duckling" is a fairy tale by Danish poet,playwright,travel writer,short story writer,and novelist Hans Christian Andersen .The tale was first published November 11,1843.
"The Ugly Duckling" tells the story of a duckling ostracized by his fellow barnyard fowl because of his awkward homeliness.To his delight ,he matures into a graceful swan,the most beautiful bird of all.With "Thumbelina" and other tales,"The Ugly Duckling" demonstrates Andersen's indentification with,and his sympathies for,the 'outsider' searching for his or her place in society.
The tale is one of Andersen's most popular.It is regularly included in selected tales collections of his works and is published time and again in illustrated storybook editions for children.The phrase,"ugly duckling",has entered several languages.The tale has seen animated film and other media adaptations.Late in life,Andersen was asked if he would write his autobiography.He responded,"I have.It's called,"The Ugly Duckling.""
